Descendants of Henri II Membertou
(Mi'kmaq Grand Chief)
Mi'Kmaq was the name of his tribe, Sachem is a title carried by a holy man of the tribe, Henri was his Christen name taken upon his baptism in 1610 and Membertou was the name he called by the French explorers.
Henri Membertou was charismatic, intelligent, and respected both by his people and the French, he was chief and holy man of the Micmac (Mi'kmaq) tribe. He lived in the territory that included Acadia, Nova Scotia and cared for the habitation at Port Royal when the French were forced to abandon it for a time. He, and his family, were the first people of the First Nations to be baptized by the French on 24 June 1610.
